Jesus and the Law

This sermon on Matthew 5:17-20 emphasizes that Jesus did not abolish the Old Testament Law but fulfilled it perfectly because humanity could not. It addresses two common misconceptions: that strict rule-keeping (like the Pharisees) or a loose approach to grace (the “liberal” mindset) are sufficient for salvation. Instead, Jesus upholds the Law as the true standard of righteousness, which reflects God’s own values and remains relevant today. However, since no one can meet this standard on their own, Jesus fulfilled it on our behalf and offers his righteousness as a gift through faith. True salvation comes not through religious effort but through accepting Christ's righteousness. As a result, believers are called to obey God’s commands out of love and gratitude, not to earn salvation, and to uphold the Bible—not culture—as the ultimate authority on right and wrong.
