Mary’s Magnificat

Dec 21, 2025    Pastor Joe Dickinson

This sermon explains that Mary’s song in Luke 1:46–56 highlights the major themes of Christ’s birth—God’s grace, mercy, and faithfulness—and shows why Christmas is a time of praise. Mary magnifies God because, by grace, He took a humble, insignificant young woman and gave her honor and eternal purpose, illustrating that God enables people to be and do what they could never accomplish on their own. She also praises God for His mercy, which means He withholds the judgment sinners deserve from those who fear Him, repent, and seek to be right with Him. Finally, Mary celebrates God’s faithfulness in keeping His promises, especially the promise to Abraham that through his offspring all nations would be blessed, fulfilled in Jesus Christ. Together, these themes remind believers that Christmas is not just about the story of Jesus’ birth, but about God’s gracious help, merciful forgiveness, and unwavering reliability—gifts that call for humility, trust, repentance, and praise.
