Christ’s Power to Forgive Sins

Jun 14, 2026    Pastor Joe Dickinson

This sermon on Matthew 9:1–8 teaches that Jesus’ greatest power is not simply healing physical illnesses but forgiving sins, which are presented as the ultimate cause of all suffering, sickness, and death in a fallen world. Using the story of the paralyzed man whose friends brought him to Jesus, the preacher argues that Christ healed the man because He first had authority to forgive his sins. The sermon emphasizes that while people often seek God for health, financial help, safety, or relationship problems, their deepest need is salvation from sin. Jesus’ ability to forgive demonstrates that He is God, and His death and sacrifice are compared to a “sin absorber” who takes humanity’s poison upon Himself. The message concludes by urging listeners to trust Christ for forgiveness, bring others to Him with the same determination as the paralyzed man’s friends, repent of destructive sins, and consider serving God by helping lead others to salvation.
